What is ashtanga yoga?

Ashtanga yoga (ashtanga vinyasa yoga) is a dynamic style of yoga with a fixed sequence of poses in which every movement is done on an inhale or an exhale. The word "ashtanga" (Sanskrit: aṣṭāṅga) means "eight limbs" – the eight stages of yoga, of which the physical poses are only one. Ashtanga takes more strength, flexibility and stamina than hatha or vinyasa, so it is for advanced students.

Why does an ashtanga practice stall?

  • 01You've practised yoga for a long time, but your sequence has stalled at the same poses.
  • 02You practise on your own or from a recording, but don't know whether your transitions and jumps are right.
  • 03In a group class the teacher can't correct everyone, and you need precise adjustments.
  • 04You want to deepen your practice with a clear structure and see your progress.

In ashtanga the poses repeat, so an ingrained mistake repeats every time – especially in jumps, transitions and difficult poses.

In a private class I see your whole sequence, we fix what's holding you back and add poses only when the earlier ones are done safely.

How I teach

Ashtanga yoga for advanced students: how we work one to one

Traditional ashtanga has a fixed sequence of poses, and for an advanced student quality matters more than the number of poses.

Private classes rest on four principles:

Imagine: you move through your sequence with confidence, the transitions become easy, and the poses you were stuck on for so long become part of your practice.

01

Breath and focal points

Ujjayi breathing, the gaze point (drishti) and bandhas – they keep the rhythm through the whole sequence.

02

Transitions and vinyasas

Jumping forward and back, transitions between seated poses – that's where ingrained mistakes usually hide.

03

Moving the sequence on

We add new poses only when the earlier ones are done safely. That way you see progress every month.

04

Versions for your body

Even for an advanced student some poses may still be out of reach – then we use preparatory versions rather than pushing "through the pain".

A private ashtanga class is €55. Want to talk about your practice? Let's start with a free 20-minute call.

Before you start

Practising ashtanga safely

  • Yoga is not medical treatment and does not replace a doctor or physiotherapist.
  • Ashtanga is one of the most intense styles of yoga, so if you're pregnant or have high blood pressure, a heart condition, glaucoma, or a wrist, shoulder, knee or back injury, talk to your doctor before you start.
  • Mention your health in your booking message – I'll adapt the sequence. A stretch should be felt, but not painful.
Who it's for

Who is ashtanga yoga for?

Works for you if…

  • you practise yoga regularly and do the basic poses with confidence;
  • you already practise ashtanga or vinyasa and want to go deeper;
  • you want the teacher's full attention on you alone;
  • you're looking for a practice that builds strength, stamina and focus.

Not ideal if…

  • you're just starting yoga – start with hatha yoga for beginners, then move on to vinyasa;
  • you want group classes – I teach ashtanga privately only; for a group, choose vinyasa yoga

“Aurimas is a great coach who really cares about you and tries his best to achieve results together with you!”

Tadas G. · translated from LithuanianClient

“We started out with bodyweight moves and gradually worked our way up to free weights, which was a really smooth progression. He's super knowledgeable about posture and technique, and he even helped me get my nutrition on track with some solid advice. What I appreciated most was how he built a schedule that actually worked with my lifestyle rather than just giving me a generic plan.”

How to start

How do you start ashtanga yoga?

1

A free 20-minute call

We talk about your yoga experience, health and goal. Ashtanga is for advanced students, so if your foundation isn't there yet, I'll suggest starting with hatha or vinyasa.

2

First class

I assess your sequence, mobility and strength, and we agree what to work on first.

3

A fixed time

With a monthly plan, classes are at the same time every week – in ashtanga, regularity matters most.

4

Your sequence grows

We add poses gradually. Between classes you can practise the part you've learned on your own.

Ashtanga yoga: what to know

What are the eight limbs of yoga?

According to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the eight limbs of yoga are: yama (ethical principles towards others), niyama (personal discipline), asana (body poses), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (withdrawing attention from the outside), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (complete absorption). In class we work with asanas, breath and attention.

Questions about ashtanga yoga

No. Ashtanga is for advanced students – people who practise yoga regularly and do the basic poses with confidence. For beginners I recommend hatha yoga, then vinyasa.

A private 60-minute class is €55. Monthly plan: 4 classes – €200, 8 classes – €360, 12 classes – €500. Paid in advance, no commitment.

Because ashtanga is for advanced students, and everyone's sequence and points to correct are different. That can't be done safely in a group, so I teach ashtanga privately only. If you want a dynamic practice in a group, vinyasa yoga on Thursdays is the one.

Yes. On Google Meet I see your whole body and correct you in real time. It's important to place the camera so the whole mat is visible. At the moment classes are online only; we plan in-person classes in Kaunas in the future.

If you've practised yoga regularly for at least a few months, do sun salutations, downward dog and the warrior poses with confidence, and keep your breathing rhythm in a dynamic class, you're most likely ready. If in doubt, we'll talk it through in a free 20-minute call.

Yes, it's usually more physically intense than hatha and vinyasa: lots of weight on the hands, jumps and transitions. That's why it builds strength and stamina especially well.

Only after talking to your doctor. At such times calmer hatha yoga is often a better fit. Mention your pregnancy or injury in your booking message and I'll advise what to choose.

Lithuanian or English – whichever you prefer.

No. A monthly plan runs for 30 days and renews monthly – you can cancel at any time. If you cancel at least 24 hours ahead, we move your class to another time.

A non-slip mat, comfortable clothes, a towel, water and a camera that sees the whole mat. Avoid a heavy meal for 2 hours before class.
